Defender for Office 365: Built-In Protection for the Modern Workplace

What is Microsoft’s Defender for Office 365?

Defender for Office 365 is Microsoft’s cloud-based email filtering and threat protection service, designed to better protect your organisation’s Microsoft 365 environment against a range of cyber threats, such as phishing, email compromise, malware, and ransomware.

Why move to Defender for Office 365?

There are many reasons why you might consider moving to Defender for Office 365, but the most common reasons are:

Improved security – Defender for Office 365 provides a significant step up in security, including:

  • Protection against email and collaboration-based cyberattacks across email, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive
  • Real-time protection for malicious links and QR codes
  • Protection against zero-day malware and viruses in attachments
  • Language model-based sentiment analysis to protect against phishing campaigns

Intelligent User and Domain Impersonation Protection

Unified and Native Protection – Defender for Office 365 is built directly into Microsoft 365, meaning it doesn’t bolt on top of the email system, it is a part of it. It also integrates with Microsoft’s other security tools, such as Microsoft 365 Defender, Defender for Endpoint, and more, to provide greater context, correlation, and a complete picture of a potential attack sequence.

Cost-efficient – a lot of organisations are already paying for Defender for Office 365 through their existing Microsoft 365 licenses, without realising. So, unlocking the full capability of Defender for Office 365 from a cost perspective, can seem a no-brainer! Sometimes it can also save on the cost of another (and sometimes less capable) third-party solution.

How will I access Defender for Office 365 / quarantined emails?

Once migration is completed, you’ll be able to access and manage your quarantined emails from the Defender for Office 365 portal.

You will see a list of quarantined emails where you’ll be able to view more details about each email, including the reason it was quarantined (e.g. spam, phishing, malware, etc).

For each quarantined message, you have several options:

Release: If you believe the message is safe, and you require the message, you can request its release

Allow Sender: If the message has been incorrectly caught, and is from a sender you know and trust, you can add their email address to the allow list.

Delete: If you want to remove the message permanently.

Preview: View the content of the message without releasing it.

If you’re ever unsure about any message, whether it’s in your quarantine list or in your mailbox, please reach out to the bzb support team for guidance.
